Amorim Sticks to His Guns on Team Strategy…

Ruben Amorim insists the 3-4-2-1 system isn’t to blame for Manchester United’s woes, and he’s sticking to it like a paperclip trying to hold a stack of bricks together until the players are pros at it. United fans had a Grimsby-sized meltdown after losing in the League Cup, but Amorim defended his tactics. At a recent press conference for Burnley’s visit, he was asked about switching to a back four. With the casualness of someone changing socks, he said he solely played in back-four setups during his own career, except now, of course, when life’s a 3-4-2-1 party.

Amorim believes once players can do this system blindfolded, he’ll happily change tactics, maybe even to something radical like 5-5-5! In a spirited chat, he revealed his strategy of being adaptable and ready to wake up one day and exclaim, “Boom! Let’s change it all!” But for now, he says the losses, like the famous defeat to Grimsby, aren’t the system’s fault. In fact, Amorim humorously confessed that during one losing match, he couldn’t tell the system apart from a noodle salad recipe. He’s focused on coaching the team to feel comfortable with all styles before pulling out any surprise formations.
