Time Waits for No Manager at Man United…

Ruben Amorim, the current captain of the Manchester United ship, believes he’ll have less time to turn things around than Mikel Arteta did at Arsenal. Arteta, who moonwalked into Arsenal back in December 2019, managed to snag the FA Cup just eight months later—no fans, no noise, just a “quiet” victory courtesy of Covid. Yet, even though they’ve flirted with top Premier League spots, Arsenal’s trophy cabinet remains famished.

Arteta has had a knack for showing star players the exit—just ask Mesut Ozil and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the latter stripped of his captaincy like a sticky candy wrapper. Meanwhile, at Man United, Amorim is building a similar storyline. He’s already disciplined Marcus Rashford enough times to make a school teacher proud and sent Alejandro Garnacho scuttling down the tunnel with just a promise of a team dinner to dodge detention.

Facing Arsenal on Sunday, Amorim suspects he won’t be chewing the same amount of gum as Arteta. “I feel that!” he exclaims. Despite a “stormy” defeat to Arsenal in December, and ongoing protests against the Glazers, Amorim is focused on getting the team motivated—even if the fans are planning to wear black and the team is languishing in 14th place. Will he weather the storm or be blown away? Watch this space!
