From Midfield Maestro to Racing Wizard…
Paul Scholes, former Manchester United star and midfielder extraordinaire, decided to trade the football pitch for a day at the races. Armed with a £2,500 bet on Kopek Des Bordes, Scholesy saw his flutter turn into a fabulous £5,000 in the blink of an eye. The horse, feeling as spirited as a youngster at Old Trafford, soared to victory at the Cheltenham Festival, leaving everyone – including William Munney – eating its dust.
As the racing spectacle unfolded, the day was tinged with emotion. A tribute was paid to beloved jockey Michael O’Sullivan, whose untimely passing left a void larger than a missed penalty. The race was renamed in O’Sullivan’s honor, ensuring his memory galloped alongside the competitors. Kopek Des Bordes, favored like a triple chocolate dessert, strutted his stuff and didn’t disappoint.
Trainer Willie Mullins likened the horse to a “champion”, and jockey Paul Townsend kept his cool, guiding Kopek Des Bordes to a glamorous finish. The horse and its owner Charlie McCarthy, post-surgery and all, celebrated wildly, with McCarthy promising he’d swim the Irish sea just to see the triumph live. Meanwhile, Scholes is still keeping us all waiting on Instagram for his post-victory dab! 🏇💰
