A Memorial’s Epic Comeback…
Once upon a time, in the mystical land of Newton Heath, young whippersnappers scrubbed choo-choo trains till they shone brighter than a disco ball. These lads, itching to ignite steam-powered adventures, suddenly swapped coal for courage on the battlefields of the First World War. Sporting the kits of legendary regiments, 56 brave souls from the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Depot kicked the bucket but won the eternal league of heroes. Even Able Seaman Leonard Sleigh, aged a mere 19, took his final cruise aboard HMS Kaboom at the Battle of Jutland. Now, their acts of valour are forever imprinted on a mighty teak monument newly double-parked at Bury Transport Museum.
Imagine discovering this colossal jigsaw of history in the Metrolink Otherworld beneath Manchester Piccadilly! This time-bending artifact, soldered together with golden threads of the past, was brilliantly reconstructed by the dashing historical sleuths at Andrew G Podmore & Son. Like a phoenix from the railway ashes, every name sparkles like a shooting star on the plaque, now visible to all fans of the heroic Northern legends.
With a restoration grant so generous it could buy a midfield maestro, and a public debut at the museum that promises to eclipse even summer transfers, this memorial is ready to dazzle its audience. So, rejoice ye football fans and history buffs! The fallen players of yesterday have their very own Wembley of remembrance, thanks to the home-gig venue at Bury Transport Museum. It’s a matchday every day for the devoted offspring to cheer their ancestors on, whenever the trains toot in majesty!
