Manchester United Dreams and Construction Beams…
Once upon a time, Michael Twiss was on the cusp of living every football fan’s dream: playing for Manchester United during their legendary 1999 treble-winning season. Alas, fate had other plans, and one decision turned his red carpet moment into a hard hat hustle. Now, instead of kicking around on the grass of Old Trafford, he’s swapping it for the concrete challenges of construction.
Our chat with Twiss began over a cozy cup of coffee. Reflecting on his journey, Twiss noted that although the urge to blister the nets at Old Trafford was tantalizing, he took a twist of fate and ended up with bricks and blueprints. It all began when former United legend Steve Bruce lured him to Sheffield United for a loan that Twiss now refers to as a slippery banana peel. An unfortunate ankle injury squashed his short-lived Premier League passion play, leaving him sidelined during United’s champagne-popping celebrations.
Fast forward past the football pitch exits to Twiss’s new chapter filled with iron beams and bustling construction sites. As a project manager at Kier Group, he gleefully wears his hard hat with pride, banters with fellow footy-loving colleagues, and occasionally, while watching his mate Beckham on Netflix, reminisces about his snapshot in football’s grand tapestry.
