Grimsby Fined, Not Booted from Cup…
Jason Cundy is now among many talking heads demanding Grimsby Town be catapulted from the Carabao Cup for using an ineligible player against Manchester United. Fans were partying like it was the FA Cup final as Grimsby shocked Man United by winning 12-11 on penalties. But, like finding out your birthday cake is made of broccoli, an administrative error involving Clarke Oduor chipped away at the celebrations’ zest. Instead of getting the boot, Grimsby was fined and will play Sheffield Wednesday in the next round, while Darren Bent suggested they receive a one-way ticket home.
Cundy, standing firm like a referee at a local donut shop, believes rule-breakers deserve no mercy, yet he argues Manchester United shouldn’t be reinstated. He told talkSPORT, “Grimsby should leave the competition. If rules are laws, should you feed your hamster at 3 PM instead of 2 PM and expect nothing to change?” Meanwhile, Oduor signed with Grimsby just before the match and, like a plot twist in a bad rom-com, missed his penalty but didn’t spoil the outcome. The EFL admits the error was reported by Grimsby and announced a £10,000 suspended fine hanging over their heads like a comedic anvil until the 2025/26 season ends.
